This Week's Money Saving Tip

I'm sure that many of you will have heard of Freecycle as it's very popular but not so many will have become members. Why? I don't know.

The
Freecycle Network is made up of thousands of online groups of people, worldwide, who give away and receive stuff for free, rather than put it into landfill.

Freecycle attracts all classes of people from all areas. It's not just for poor people!

"How do I get into this?" you say. Go to the
Freecycle website and either search for your town or borough and country, separated by a comma, to see if there's a group in your town, or, which I think is easier, browse the groups to find the ones in your area.

You will need a
Yahoo Account, which is free, because Freecycle's made up of Yahoo Groups but once you've done that, you can join your local group(s).

People send emails to the group with items which they wish to give away and if anyone wants the item(s), they email that person, politely or they may not be chosen, to see if they can have it. Some people choose the first person who writes, whereas others wait 24hrs and then choose someone to have their stuff. Once decided, it's upto those people to sort out a time to collect etc and there you have it, two happy people! Best of all, the stuff hasn't gone into landfill, it's been put to good use, and saved someone the cost of buying the item, as well as clearning someone else's clutter.

You get furniture, electronics, computers, cars (with and without tax and MOT!) and all kinds of furniture and household goods. You'd be surprised what people give away!

Give it a go! Save money and save the earth or de-clutter and save the earth!

  1. If people really want to get serious about saving money then they should add Bathroom Bidet Sprayers to all their bathrooms. Available at www.bathroomsprayers.com with these you won't even need toilet paper any more, just a towel to dry off! It's cheap and can be installed without a plumber; and runs off the same water line to your toilet. You'll probably pay for it in a few months of toilet paper savings. And after using one of these you won't know how you lasted all those years with wadded up handfuls of toilet paper, nasty. Now we're talking green and helping the environment without any pain.

  2. I think it's a great idea if you don't have the space, money or inclination to buy a bidet. Definitely better for the environment, although I still think I'd use toilet paper to dry myself, for hygiene reasons, but it would be a lot less for the sewage companies to have to clean up, so I think that the extra water use could be forgiven too. Like you say, it'd pay for itself in a short while through buying less toilet paper. Good post!
